Mary also served as the women’s basketball head coach at Western Kentucky University for 10 seasons, posting a record of 199-119 with the Lady Toppers from 2002-2012. Prior to that, she was the associate head coach and assistant head coach / recruiting coordinator at WKU between 1994-2001.

“We are excited to have Mary join the DA family and lead our girls basketball program for years to come, as we continue to prepare our students for college, life, and eternity,” said Athletic Director Kevin Harper.  “I’m looking forward to watching her share her extensive knowledge of the game with our student athletes, leading with an emphasis on our Christian principles at DA, while focusing on player development on and off the court.”

Growing up in Kentucky, Cowles was also a highly decorated high school basketball player, as she was named Miss Basketball in 1987. That led to a very successful college career at WKU from 1987-1991, where the Lady Toppers advanced to the Sweet 16 her senior season.  She has been involved in 10 of WKU’s 20 NCAA Tournament appearances as a player and coach.

“I am so excited to join the Davidson Academy family and to coach their girls basketball team.  I am very thankful to Dr. Judd, Coach Harper and Mrs. Moore for giving me this opportunity,” said Cowles. “We are going to compete, we are going to work hard every day to develop the skills that God has given us, and we are going to be fun to watch!! Go Bears!!”
